In the vast landscape of C-dramas, where grand palaces and sweeping landscapes often overshadow the characters within them, every so often a story emerges that feels less like a script and more like a heartbeat.

“Pursuit of Jade” is one of those rare treasures.

Many are drawn to the magnetic presence of Xie Zheng (Zhang Linghe) and the chemistry he shares with Fan Changyu (Tian Xiwei) that truly anchors the story. Together, they create a presence that is as visually breathtaking as it is emotionally profound.

But what is it about this particular bond that makes it so unforgettable?

Reasons Romance in Pursuit of Jade in Unforgettable

They were fated to meet each other.  No matter what happens, they are destined to find each other and that inevitability is what makes their love so romantic.

Do you believe that some meetings are not accidents, but arrangements made by heaven, by fate, by the weight of past lives, and unfinished debts? I do.

But at the same time, heaven may arrange the meeting, but it’s the commitment and the choice of two people to stay together.

In Episode 40 during the conversation between Prime Minister Wei Yan and Grand Tutor Tao Yi, the truth about what happened in the Jinzhou Fire was exposed. In the background, we can see Fan Changyu and Xie Zheng listening.

Here, we get to sense that, in one way or another, in his journey to uncover the truth of the Jinzhou Massacre, Xie Zheng was bound to meet Fan Changyu, Wei Qilin’s eldest daughter. It just happened that fate brought them together on a snowy day, when she found him half-dead. They were always meant to meet.

Also, at the latter part, the drama offers a glimpse of what could have been had the massacre 17 years ago never occurred. Wei Wan (Xie Zheng’s mother) and Meng Lau (Fan Changyu’s mother) would have stayed dear friends. In a quiet moment on the porch, a pregnant Meng Lau sits beside Wei Wan as a young Xie Zheng practices nearby. When his mother calls him over and playfully asks whether the baby will be a boy or a girl, he answers without hesitation…a girl.

No matter how events unfolded, they were destined to meet, perhaps by the will of the heavens, as their families were already bound by an unseen thread, and in time, Xie Zheng’s quest to avenge his father and Fan Changyu’s resolve to clear her father’s name would inevitably intertwine and would bring them together as part of a greater purpose in each other’s life.

This is what makes the romance unforgettable in Pursuit of Jade. It invites you to believe in fate, in the quiet hand of heaven’s will, even as others insist that fate can never replace choice, and yet, in the end, we all meet certain people and only later realize the profound role they were always meant to play in our lives.

“It is fine. They already tangled. Trust me. In this life, the next life, and every life after, we are tied together.” – Xie Zheng

Think about a “fated” meeting in your own life, perhaps a friend, a mentor, or even a book that found you at the right time.

If that meeting hadn’t happened, how would your “intentional path” be different today? How can you cultivate more “openness” this week to allow new, fated connections to enter?

Do you believe that destiny provides the “door,” but intentional choice is what keeps us in the “room”? Where in your life are you waiting for fate to do the work that actually requires your choice?

Beneath their hardened exteriors, they are soft with one another, each knowing when to step back, when to yield, when to chase, and in that quiet grace, their love deepens.

In Episode 16, we witness a quiet but painful argument unfolds as Xie Zheng asks Fan Changyu to make a birthday wish, one he promises to grant for the year. While she senses he is about to leave, their words clash because one longs to stay but cannot, and the other wishes him to stay but refuses to hold him back out of obligation in a marriage that began as convenience.

And yet, the very next day, we see in Episode 17 that their love reveals itself in silence. Xie Zheng on the way back to his mission, pauses on the mountain overlooking Lin’an, Fan Changyu’s hometown. We see Fan Changyu going through what he left behind, discovering his birthday gift for her, a small but telling proof that even in distance, they never stopped caring for each other.

In Episode 24, in her search for Yan Zheng at the military camp, she finally finds him and in that moment, she humbly admits she came for him and vows never to speak of divorce again. She tends to his wounds and helps him heal, while Yan Zheng, in turn, sets aside his own pain to meet her halfway.

Towards the end of Episode 26, in a shocking twist, Fan Changyu discovers that the Marquis of Wu’an and her matrilocal husband, Yan Zheng, are the same person. This leaves her feeling deeply betrayed after all the times she had trusted him. In Episode 27, their confrontation is raw and painful and in the night, with Xie Zheng humbly asks for her hand again, this time as himself, only to be turned down.

The following evening, in the quiet of the night, they find each other by the stream. They end up sparring, and sharing a simple meal of grilled fish. This reveals what truly defines them. They do not hold grudges and they soften despite the hurt and between them, love and reason continue to coexist.

Yan Zheng: “Do you really want to divorce me that badly? “

Fan Changyu: “No divorce. I thought if you hadn’t married into my family, you wouldn’t have been conscripted. If we’d signed that divorce letter sooner, you wouldn’t have been take by the soldiers and you wouldn’t be hurt. Mr. Zhao told me not to leave things unsettled as I grow old. When I came, I’d already made up my mind. If you’re alive, we go home together. If you died…I’d bury you. An on every holiday, I’d burn joss paper for you.”

Yan Zheng: “I knew it. That night. I shouldn’t have treated you that way.”

Fan Changyu: “You know it now? I got it over a long time ago.”

Modern romance often feels like a series of strategic moves, but beneath the surface of this drama is a lesson in emotional safety. Xie Zheng and Changyu’s ability to be soft with one another is their true ‘pursuit of jade’.

We often think of strength as standing our ground, but in Pursuit of Jade, true strength is shown when the characters are soft enough to yield to one another.

Where in your life are you holding on too tight to being right or strong? How would your day change if you viewed yielding not as a sign of weakness, but as an intentional act of grace?

They may stand strong against the world, but when it comes to each other, they become each other’s shield, willing to risk everything to keep the other safe and comfortable.

We see evidence of this across several episodes. When Fan Changyu had to appear before the court to defend her parents’ property against her uncle, Yan Zheng patiently trained her on how to present her case before the magistrate, despite how difficult it was to teach her, he never lost his patience.

In another moment, Yan Zheng quietly redeems the hairpin that Fan Changyu had pawned after overhearing her conversation with her sister, Changning, learning that she had sacrificed it to support the family, including paying for his medicine.

And when Fan Changyu is confronted on the road by Songyan and his mother, who offer money to “repay” her family’s past support, Yan Zheng steps in without hesitation. He carefully listed and calculated every single contribution her family had made. It’s a gesture that leaves Fan Changyu both surprised and deeply seen.

When Yan Zheng is arrested for the murder of the bandits, Fan Changyu stands before the magistrate to defend her husband, even offering to take the stroke punishment in his place. But Yan Zheng refuses to allow it, stepping in to shield her instead.

Time and again, they go out of their way to protect one another, each placing the other’s safety and well-being above their own.

Fan Changyu: “You were the one who did it, weren’t you? This wound of yours, even if Uncle pressed on it, wouldn’t have split open like this. You got into a fight. From your build, I can tell you’re trained in martial arts.”

Yan Zheng: “I was an armed escort traveling north and south. It’s just for protection. I didn’t intentionally hide it from you.”

Fan Changyu: “There’s nothing of value here. If they want to smash it, let them. Why did you take action.

Yan Zheng: “If I didn’t take action, they would have taken this (hand over the deed title).”

Fan Changyu: “You did it for this title deed?”

Yan Zheng: “Hmm…(nods).”

Fan Changyu: “Thank you (teary eyed).”

What makes their bond so hauntingly beautiful is the contrast between their public strength and their private surrender. They showed us that while the world may be harsh and demanding, a love that prioritizes the other’s safety and comfort is a flame that can never be extinguished. It is a quiet, fierce, and inevitable grace. They proved that the most powerful form of love isn’t just standing side-by-side to face the world, but it’s also the willingness to risk everything just to ensure the other person can finally breathe, safe and comfortable.

Beyond the beautiful costumes and the fated meetings, Pursuit of Jade offers a blueprint for how we can show up for the people we love in 2026. We may not be risking our lives in a historical court setting, but we face modern “storms” every day, stress at work, burnout, or anxiety.

Ask your partner or a friend, “What is the heaviest thing on your plate today, and how can I shield you from it for just one hour?”

They did not let their past define or damage their love, instead, they chose to stand by each other and that is what makes their love truly extraordinary.

Fan Changyu: “You…Can you stop being good to me? The kinder you are, the more uneasy I feel..

Xie Zheng: “Is it because of who you are?”

Fan Changyu: “You know?”

Xie Zheng: “I saw that letter. I know he was your father. I also know what you’re afraid of. But I want you to know, I’ll keep investigating until I find the truth. And on this path, I want to be by your side.”

In Episode 32, we see this reassuring stance of Xie Zheng for Fan Changyu and it is heartwarming. At the heart of their story lies a web of politics and betrayal. Fan Changyu’s father is branded a traitor in the Jinzhou massacre, the very tragedy that took Xie Zheng’s father’s life.

By all logic, they were meant to stand on opposite sides, bound not by love but by vengeance. Yet Xie Zheng chooses to remain, promising Fan Changyu that he will stand with her in uncovering the truth. Perhaps they were fated to meet, but instead of letting destiny dictate hatred, they choose each other, and that choice is what makes their love extraordinary.

He even endures the 108 strokes from his uncle, Wei Yan, a quiet but powerful sign that he has chosen to love Fan Changyu fully, without guilt or hesitation.

Wei Yan: “As for that so-called live-in marriage, even the name used was false. How could such a union be taken seriously?”

Xie Zheng: “I have already taken the 108 lashes. You have no right to decide my affairs. A marriage letter is nothing but paper. If I acknowledge it, then it is real.”

The moment I love most is when Xie Zheng stands before his parents’ memorial and introduces her to them. It reveals his sincerity, his readiness to face the world, and the quiet pride he takes in his marriage to Fan Changyu.

Xie Zheng: “Father, Mother, please hear your son. Fan Changyu, a woman of Lin’an. She saved me from death’s door. When my heart had gone cold, she taught it to love again. I have spent more than ten years on the battlefield. All that time, I never felt truly alive. Until I met her, only then did I see life was worth living. Before your spirits above, I make this vow. This woman is the companion of my life. I will never betray this vow. My heart will stay true till death.”

Ultimately, what makes their romance unforgettable is that they refused to let their scars become the blueprint for their future. They proved that while we cannot control the stories written for us in our past, we have full agency over who we stand beside in our present and future.

By choosing to let their love be a place of renewal rather than a reminder of old wounds, they transformed an ordinary connection into something extraordinary. Their story is a powerful reminder that who we choose to be today is far more romantic than who we were forced to be yesterday.

For Xie Zheng, despite his stature as a Marquis, he respects his wife enough to give her space to grow without trying to change her and instead treats her as an equal partner.

In Episode 28, Xie Zheng discovers that Fan Changyu has left the camp, leaving behind only a note asking him not to look for her as she has something to do. Still, he saddles his horse and rides after her, managing to catch up.

In that moment of confrontation, more of their feelings surface. Xie Zheng offers to help her rescue Qian and save Lin’an, but Fan Changyu refuses. In the end, he chooses to understand and lets her go, though he worries for her safety, he knows her well enough to respect who she is, a woman who cares deeply for others and remains true to the promises she makes to herself.

Fan Changyu: “But right now there’s something i must do. I have to go save Quian.”

Xie Zheng: “But you know the people who took Qian are no ordinary foes. On your own, you might not be able to save her.”

Fan Changu: ” I have to try to find out.”

Xie Zheng: “How about this. I’ll avenge what happened in Lin’an for you. I’ll find the people you’re looking for. I’ll rescue Yu Qianqian for you. You don’t have to take the risk. Okay?”

Fan Changyu: “I like you. But I can’t spend the rest of my life relying on you. If I did, I wouldn’t be me anymore.”

Xie Zheng: “Okay. I know. Once you’ve made up your mind, you won’t easily change it.”

A Marquis by title, but a partner by choice, Xie Zheng’s love is unforgettable because it is rooted in the rarest of romantic ingredients: autonomy. He doesn’t try to fix or change her; he simply provides the soil in which she can grow.

In the final episode, we see them ride side by side into their township, a true power couple, each formidable and accomplished in their own right, yet unwavering in their support for one another.

For me, it was It’s a striking, unforgettable sight. Here’s a couple who is never intimidated by each other’s strength.

In an era of historical hierarchy, Xie Zheng’s greatest act of love wasn’t his protection, but his respect. Despite his title as a Marquis, he understood a truth that many in the modern day still struggle to grasp, that love is not about ownership, but about room to breathe.

By treating his wife as an equal and giving her the space to evolve into her own person, he transformed their marriage from a traditional contract into a dynamic partnership. This is why their romance is unforgettable, it mirrors the modern ideal of a relationship where two whole individuals grow side-by-side, without ever trying to diminish the other’s light.

Ask yourself, “Am I providing my partner (or my friends, siblings) the space to grow, or am I unconsciously trying to ‘edit’ them to fit my comfort? True partnership, like Xie Zheng’s, is about being the wind beneath someone’s wings and not the cage around them.

A Final Thought

The romance in Pursuit of Jade feels so compelling because, set against our modern lens, we can’t help but compare it to the way relationships often unfold today. In our time, bonds can feel fragile. Many people hesitate to fight for love when it becomes difficult, and it’s increasingly rare to see those who stay steady through misunderstanding, distance, or pressure.

Against that backdrop, a love that endures conflict, chooses loyalty over convenience, and holds firm to its vows feels almost rare. That contrast is what makes their story feel so romantic. It reminds us of a kind of devotion we still long for, even if we don’t always see it around us.

I hope everyone can find a kind of romance like Pursuit of Jade, not necessarily identical, but one that carries the same sincerity, loyalty, and courage to stay. Even if it exists in fiction, it still reminds us that this kind of devotion is something worth believing in, and perhaps even quietly hoping for in real life.

If the story of Xie Zheng and his “Jade” has touched your heart as much as it has mine, the romance is only the beginning. Their journey offers a wealth of wisdom for anyone looking to live and love with more intention.

In my companion piece, I dive deeper into the character arcs that made this drama a true masterclass in resilience and personal growth.
